Accessibility

What we aim for

We build and test this website against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, the standard most public institutions in the U.S. are held to.

What the site does today

• A “Skip to content” link on every page for people using a keyboard or switch device.
• Full keyboard operation of the menu (including the phone-size menu button, which announces whether it is open or closed) and of the interactive history timeline, with a clear gold outline showing where you are on the page.
• Nothing moves on its own if your device is set to reduce motion: the marquee’s chasing lights hold still.
• Text and buttons are sized and colored to stay legible. In September 2026 we measured every text color against the WCAG contrast formula; the small red and teal accents and the fine print in the footer were adjusted to meet the AA standard on our dark background.
• Images carry descriptive text so screen readers can announce them, and expandable timeline entries announce whether they are open or closed.

Known limitations

We’d rather be honest about the gaps than pretend they aren’t there:

• Some historic photographs are scans of old prints and postcards. We describe them in text, but the images themselves can be low-resolution or hard to make out.
• Embedded donation and membership forms come from our payment partner, Zeffy, and our box-office and events site is a separate website. We don’t control how accessible those third-party pages are.
• Some links open other organizations’ sites (for example our social media or payment forms). We don’t control how accessible those pages are.
